Herbert Walter Lockwood was born in Isleham (Newmarket Q4-1886 3B:537), son of John and Ann LOCKWOOD (née RUDLING).

1891 census...Aged 4, Walter was at Pratt Street, Soham with his father John LOCKWOOD [34], thrashing machine drive, born Barham, Suffolk; his mother Ann [37] born Saham, Norfolk; sisters Alice [17], Elizabeth [13] both born in Shipdham, Norfolk and Rosella [11] born Fordham; brother John William [7] born Isleham.

1901 census... Aged 14, Walter, a journeyman baker, was at Clay Street, Soham with his parents; brothers William (time keeper) and Bertie [9] born Soham; sisters Elizabeth and a visitor, Eva CLEMENTS [3] born Soham.

In Q4-1907 Herbert Walter LOCKWOOD married Sarah CLARKE (Newmarket Q4-1907 3B:1251)

1911 census...Aged 24, a farm labourer, Herbert was at Clay Street, Soham with his wife Sarah [21] born Soham Fen and their sons Reginald [3] and Sidney William [5 months], both born in Soham.


Enlisted in Nuneaton.
The 5th Ox & Bucks were at Delville Wood. The war diary on 17th August refers to the area " Longueval is dust and craters and both Longueval and the Wood are carpeted with the remains of bodies and discarded munitions and material of war, British and German."
Their objective ( with 42nd Infantry Brigade) on the 24th August was to take the trench from the junction of HOP Alley and BEER trench - junction of ALE Alley and BEER trench- junction of ALE Alley and east corner of DELVILLE WOOD and to clear the remainder of DELVILLE WOOD. In this action the war diary gives Other Ranks casualties as 39 killed, 115 wounded, 9 missing. CWGC makes it 59 of all ranks killed.

Unable to find when he was Mentioned in Despatches, maybe it is the date lower right on the card when gazetted ( L.G. 1/1/16 ).

Local press report:-
....Pte.Walter H.Lockwood of the Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry was killed in action on Aug.24th. The late Pte.Lockwood, whose widow and five little children reside in Clay Street, was the second son of Mr.and Mrs. John Lockwood, also of Clay Street. It will be remembered that reference was made in these columns some time ago to the gallant and meritorious service rendered by this soldier, who at great personal risk, amid heavy shellfire succeeded in rescuing his wounded officer and carrying him to a place of safety, near Hooge,on Sep.25,1915 for which he was heartily congratulated by his superior officer and a certificate given. Pte.Lockwood, who was 29 years of age, had previously served in the Army, but re-enlisted in February 1915.
